Abstract

Ontlastingsproblemen kunnen zich presenteren als obstipatie (verstopping, constipatie) en als fecesincontinentie. Daarnaast kunnen zich bij kinderen maag-darmklachten en andere symptomen voordoen die wel lijken te worden veroorzaakt door de retentie van ontlasting in de dikke darm, maar die niet vallen onder de definitie van obstipatie. Ook het prikkelbaredarmsyndroom gaat gepaard met veranderingen in het defecatiepatroon. Over het algemeen hebben defecatieproblemen een functionele achtergrond; organische oorzaken komen voor, maar zijn zeldzaam.
