Abstract
Van non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) worden jaarlijks ruim 6 miljoen voorschriften via de apotheek aan de Nederlandse bevolking afgeleverd (18,8% van de bevolking krijgt jaarlijks een NSAID afgeleverd) (1,2). Daarnaast zijn er nog tal van personen die NSAID’s bij de drogist aanschaffen. Naast de gunstige effecten (pijnstilling, ontstekingsremming) hebben NSAID’s ook ernstige bijwerkingen, waarvan de gastro-intestinale problemen en nierfunctiestoornissen de bekendste zijn. Ernstige gastrointestinale schade (perforatie, bloeding en/of obstructie) leiden naar schatting tot ruim 2800 ziekenhuisopnames per jaar (3). Vanwege het grote gebruik van NSAID’s en de potentieel ernstige gastro-intestinale bijwerkingen met als gevolg hoge maatschappelijke kosten, heeft het Kwaliteitsinstituut voor de Gezondheidszorg CBO besloten een richtlijn hierover te maken. In 2003 is deze multidisciplinaire richtlijn ‘NSAID-gebruik en preventie van maagschade’ verschenen, met daarin een aantal aanbevelingen voor de dagelijkse praktijk (4).
