In hoofdstuk 1 van dit boek is besproken dat de adviezen met betrekking tot vaccinatie en malariaprofylaxe voor reizigers regelmatig veranderen. De hygiëne wordt in verschillende delen van de wereld steeds beter, waardoor bijvoorbeeld risico’s op buiktyfus op bestemmingen zoals Thailand en Maleisië de laatste decennia veel kleiner zijn geworden.
