Samenvatting
In dit onderzoek is gekeken wat het effect is van een jaar fietsen naar het werk op de fysieke fitheid, risicofactoren voor hart- en vaatziekten en de gezondheidsgerelateerde levenskwaliteit bij gezonde, voorheen niet-getrainde mannen en vrouwen. Vijfenzestig deelnemers fietste gedurende een jaar drie keer per week van en naar het werk, de vijftien leden van de controlegroep werd gevraagd om hun sportbeoefening en andere fysieke activiteiten niet te wijzigen. Er werden maximale inspanningstests, bloedstalen en vragenlijsten afgenomen. Alle metingen werden na zes en twaalf maanden herhaald. De deelnemers noteerden de afgelegde afstand, frequentie en duur van het fietsen en andere fysieke activiteiten in weekboeken. In de eerste zes maanden fietsten de deelnemers significant vaker dan in de daaropvolgende zes maanden. Bij deelnemers die meer dan 25 km per week fietsten, met een frequentie van minstens drie keer per week, verbeterden de fysieke parameters. De vitaliteit verbeterde in de eerste zes maanden bij de hele groep. De conclusie is dat een jaar fietsen naar het werk een positieve invloed heeft op de fysieke prestatie en mogelijk een positieve invloed op de gezondheidsgerelateerde levenskwaliteit, bloedwaarden en de bloeddruk bij voorheen niet-getrainde mannen en vrouwen. Het minimale energieverbruik (kcal) voor een toename in de fysieke parameters lijkt 1500 kcal/week voor mannen en 1000 kcal/ week voor vrouwen te zijn. Dit zou neerkomen op ongeveer 25 kilometer per week fietsen voor zowel mannen als vrouwen.
