Jaarlijks komen ongeveer 600.000 mensen onder behandeling voor een letsel van de enkelbanden. Daarmee is het een van meest voorkomende traumatische afwijkingen. Ruim de helft ontstaat tijdens sportbeoefening. In ruim driekwart van de gevallen van enkelletsel is er sprake van been inversietrauma. In de NHG-standaard ‘Enkeldistorsie’ wordt vermeld dat deze in de registratieprojecten in de Nederlandse huisartspraktijk apart wordt gecodeerd. Het Transitieproject geeft weliswaar een incidentie aan van 11,1 per 1.000 patiënten per jaar,[3] maar daarmee is nog geen goed inzicht verkregen in de ernst van het letsel noch in het percentage patiënten dat behandeld wordt met een tapebandage. Het merendeel (85%) van de behandelepisodes eindigt in vier weken of eerder, duidend op een gunstig beloop in de meeste gevallen. Uit de Continue Morbiditeitsregistratie blijkt over de jaren 1993 tot 1997 een incidentie van 12,8 per 1.000 patiënten per jaar.[4] Dit houdt in dat jaarlijks ongeveer 200.000 patiënten met een inversietrauma de huisarts raadplegen. Voor een ‘gemiddelde’ praktijk van 2.350 patiënten betekent dit eens per twee weken één nieuwe patiënt met deze aandoening.[1]
