Abstract
De percutane behandeling van coronaire atherotrombose is de laatste kwart eeuw uitgegroeid tot de meest toegepaste therapeutische benadering bij patiënten met coronaire hartziekten bij wie medicamenteuze therapie alleen niet afdoende is. Per jaar ondergaan ongeveer 1,8 per 1000 Nederlanders een dergelijke behandeling.1–3 De ontwikkelingen die dit mogelijk hebben gemaakt, vinden hun oorsprong in de eerste helft van de vorige eeuw. Nadat Claude Bernard in 1844 de eerste hartkatheterisatie uitvoerde bij een paard, werd in 1929 de eerste gedocumenteerde hartkatheterisatie verricht bij de mens. Op 25-jarige leeftijd schoof Werner Forssmann een katheter, die voordien uitsluitend gebruikt werd voor een urologische toepassing, door een eigen armvene naar het hart en legde dat op een röntgenfoto vast.
