Tijdens de opstijging van een persluchtduiker expandeert de lucht in de longen volgens de wetmatigheid die beschreven is door Boyle (p.V/T = constant). Onder normale omstandigheden ontsnapt deze lucht via de luchtweg. Iedere omstandigheid die kan leiden tot een blokkade van de afvoer is een contra-indicatie voor het duiken.
