Samenvatting

De letterlijke vertaling van mentale retardatie is geestelijke vertraging. Vaak wordt mentale retardatie ook wel intellectuele stoornis of mentale handicap genoemd; dit zijn de namen voor een ontwikkelingsstoornis waarbij de verstandelijke vermogens zich niet in een normaal tempo ontwikkelen en waarschijnlijk ook nooit een normaal niveau zullen bereiken.
