Registratie van de relatie tussen de edentate kaken

Het registreren en vastleggen van de relatie tussen de edentate onder- en bovenkaak, alsmede het overbrengen van deze stand naar een articulator is een lastig onderdeel van de vervaardiging van een volledige gebitsprothese. Immers, bij de edentate patiënt ontbreken de gebitselementen die zowel in occlusie als tijdens articulatie de stand en de bewegingen van de onderkaak mede bepalen. Daarnaast spelen de orofaciale musculatuur en de beide kaakgewrichten een belangrijke rol bij de bewegingen en de stand van de mandibula. De mandibula kan daarbij (zowel in verticale als in horizontale zin) veel posities innemen. Voor de registratie en de vastlegging van deze posities wordt uitgegaan van een bepaalde stand van de mandibula ten opzichte van de schedel. Deze stand wordt vastgelegd tijdens de zogenaamde beetbepaling, ook wel beetregistratie of relatiebepaling genoemd.
