Reductie van het alveolaire kaakbot

Vanaf het 35ste jaar neemt de botmassa van het skelet geleidelijk af. Deze afname is fysiologisch en is het eerst in het trabeculaire bot en daarna in het corticale bot te herkennen. Dit botverlies is op zich geen probleem. Wanneer de botmassa echter onder een zekere kritische massa komt en de trabeculaire structuren verdwijnen, ontstaat een situatie waarbij botbreuken na gering trauma of zelfs spontaan kunnen optreden. Dan is de ziekte osteoporose aanwezig.
