Behandeling van de sterk geresorbeerde onder- en bovenkaak met implantaten

De volledige gebitsprothese in woord en beeld

Veel prothesedragers ondervinden ernstige problemen met het functioneren van hun gebitsprothese door de voortschrijdende resorptie van het kaakbot. Dit is echter niet de enige factor die de aard en de ernst van de problemen met een gebitsprothese bepaalt. In hoofdstuk 13 werd vastgesteld dat ook de kwaliteit van de gebitsprothese, de attitude van de prothesedragers en de patiënt-tandartsrelatie een belangrijke rol spelen. Tevens werd aangegeven dat velen naar volle tevredenheid een gebitsprothese dragen ondanks een ongunstige mondsituatie of juist ontevreden zijn met een kwalitatief goede gebitsprothese. Tevreden zijn met een gebitsprothese is een complex gebeuren. Het is van belang dit te beseffen op het moment dat de toepassing van implantaten wordt overwogen. De klachten en wensen van de patiënt en de te verwachten ‘winst’ van de implantologische behandeling moeten worden afgewogen tegen de fysieke, mentale en financiële lasten en risico’s van een behandeling met implantaten. Voor het welslagen van een dergelijke behandeling is dan ook een goede samenwerking tussen de betrokken behandelaars essentieel om alle aspecten goed tegen elkaar af te kunnen wegen.
