Abstract
Dit hoofdstuk gaat over diagnostiek bij autismespectrumstoornissen (ASS). Vaak wordt in het kader van diagnostiek bij ASS de vierde editie van het Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), ‘de DSM-IV’ (APA, 1994), gebruikt. Inmiddels is er ook een ‘DSM-IV-TR’ (APA, 2000). De DSM-IV-TR (TR = ‘text revised’) is een herziene versie waarin de uitleg van de criteria is aangepast maar de criteria zelf onveranderd zijn gebleven. De DSM is een classificatiesysteem met als belangrijkste doel een goede communicatie tussen hulpverleners over de gehele wereld, en, daaraan gekoppeld, het verwerven van wetenschappelijke kennis. In de praktijk van de professionele hulpverlening wordt vaak geclassificeerd en wordt gekeken of een bepaalde casus in een bepaalde classificatie past. De classificatie geeft een beschrijving op hoofdlijnen van het spectrum van autisme aan de hand van criteria waar internationaal consensus over is. De DSM-IV beschrijft een breed spectrum van autistische stoornissen. In de praktijk zijn de meest voorkomende beelden: autisme, het syndroom van Asperger en de aan autisme verwante contactstoornis.
