Abstract

Systemen van alternatieve communicatie worden vaak gebruikt om communicatieproblemen bij mensen met een autismespectrumstoornis (ASS) te verminderen. De communicatieproblemen vormen een belangrijk kenmerk in de diagnose (DSM-IV-criteria; American Psychiatric Association, 1994). Een aantal mensen ontwikkelt spraak, maar over het algemeen is er een taalachterstand of een gestoorde taalontwikkeling. Gedragsinterventies zoals Discrete Trial Training of DTT (zie Peters-Scheffer, Mulders & Didden, dit boek) en Pivotal Response Training (zie Bruinsma, dit boek) worden toegepast om spraak te stimuleren en bevorderen. Naar schatting één tot twee derde van de mensen met ASS ontwikkelt echter geen spraak (Magiati & Howlin, 2003). Voor hen worden alternatieve, non-verbale vormen van communicatie gebruikt, zoals gebaren of werken met afbeeldingen (plaatjes, foto’s, pictogrammen of symbolen).
