ADHD en persoonlijkheidsstoornissen

Abstract

ADHD is de afkorting van ‘attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder’ (‘aandachtstekortstoornis met hyperactiviteit’). ADHD is de meest gediagnosticeerde psychiatrische stoornis bij kinderen, die zich bij ongeveer de helft in de volwassenheid voortzet. ADHD bij volwassenen kan gepaard gaan met persoonlijkheidsstoornissen, maar er ook voor worden aangezien terwijl de ADHD niet wordt onderkend. De differentiële diagnostiek is complex vanwege symptoomoverlap tussen ADHD en persoonlijkheidsstoornissen, en het tot nu toe ontbreken van kennis over diagnostiek van ADHD op volwassen leeftijd in alle beroepsopleidingen van hulpverleners in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg. Dit hoofdstuk geeft informatie over epidemiologie, fenomenologie, biologische achtergronden en diagnostiek van ADHD bij volwassenen, bespreekt de comorbiditeit met as-I- en as-IIstoornissen en enkele handvatten voor de differentiële diagnostiek, en licht de (volgorde van) de behandeling van ADHD en comorbide persoonlijkheidsstoornissen toe.
