Abstract
De psychotherapeutische behandeling van patiënten met borderline problematiek heeft een lange en rijke traditie. Al in de jaren dertig van de vorige eeuw ontstonden er initiatieven om de psychoanalyse, toen nog de enige psychotherapeutische methode, ook toepasbaar te maken voor meer complexe niet-neurotische problematiek. Na wankele resultaten met de behandeling van psychotische stoornissen werd een groep patiënten geïdentificeerd die van een psychoanalytische psychotherapie kon profiteren maar niet in aanmerking kwam voor een psychoanalyse. Zetzel (1968) identificeerde de groep als de ‘bad hysterics’, maar ook Balint (1968) beschrijft in zijn beroemde boek The basic fault patiënten bij wie we nu de borderline organisatie herkennen. Ook de indertijd baanbrekende publicaties van Helène Deutsch (1942) over de ‘as-if’-persoonlijkheid kunnen hier genoemd worden. Ook auteurs als Rosenfeld, Winnicott en Fairbairn (zie Fonagy & Target, 2003) hebben in hun werk aandacht geschonken aan deze problematiek. Later voegden zich daar auteurs bij die belangrijk werk hebben verricht in (poli)klinische behandelingen, zoals Masterson (1976) en Gunderson (1985).
