Part of the book series: Updates in Surgery ((UPDATESSURG))

Abstract

Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare endocrine malignancy accounting for 1 to 5% of all cases of primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT) [1, 2], with a higher incidence in the Japanese and Italian series [1, 3]. Usually men and women are equally affected, while in benign HPT the female/male ratio is >3 [4]; the age at diagnosis is approximately in the mid-40s or 50s [4], 10 years earlier than benign HPT [5].
