Abstract
Primary headaches are not associated with underlying pathology and may be classified as: migraine, tension-type headache, cluster headache, and trigeminal autonomic cephalgias, and their subtypes.
On the contrary, secondary headaches are symptoms of underlining diseases.
Diagnostic criteria are based on the most important characteristics of pain and of associated symptoms.
Principles of treatment ā In primary headaches, symptomatic treatment and prophylaxis with different drugs are employed. In secondary headaches, therapy is shaped according to the specific causative disorder.
Disability may be relevant in primary headaches but depends on causative disorders in secondary headaches.
Risk factors for long-term prognosis may be demographic, clinical, or pharmacological in primary headaches. They are consonant with their causative disorders in secondary headaches.
