Cardiac Catheterization for Congenital Heart Disease

Abstract

Isolated patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the common congenital heart diseases. Its incidence ranges from 5 to 10 % of congenital heart diseases. Usually, large PDA causes symptoms early in life requiring early closure. It usually gives specific signs that will lead to further investigations and mostly the diagnosis will be confirmed by echocardiography.

The advancement of transcatheter closure of PDA started in the early 1970s of the last century. For the last 20 years, it developed fast with new technology and advance experiences. The PDA occluder devices and coils give a chance to treat PDA more safely and easily with minimum risk and complications.

The new trails of low-profile devices and coils will give chance to close PDA in special cases like premature infants and difficult PDA morphology. Transcatheter closure of PDA is now the first line management in almost all PDA cases.

In this chapter, we will concentrate on the commonest duct occluder devices and coils being used. The aim is to give a clear and simple step-by-step procedure description of transcatheter closure of PDA. For the advanced and difficult procedure of PDA closure, one can refer to the specific resources.
