Diagnostics of Infantile Hemangiomas Including Visceral Hemangioma

Abstract

Imaging of infantile hemangiomas is important for the diagnosis of ascertained lesions. Ultrasound and MR are the best modalities to make the diagnosis. High-vessel density and high-peak arterial systolic Doppler shifts with low-resistive index are the characteristics of the soft-tissue and visceral infantile hemangiomas. Congenital hemangiomas are similar to infantile hemangiomas, except that calcifications can be seen. On MR, infantile hemangioma is hyperintense on T2 without perilesional edema, and a significant enhancement is seen after contrast injection. If these criteria are not present, a biopsy has to be performed to exclude the possibility of a malignant tumor.
