Abstract
Knee prosthetic replacement is a widely performed and successful procedure that improves the quality of life in more than 90 % of patients. The choice and the more anatomic prosthesis and the appropriate surgical technique are still challenging for orthopedic surgeons. However, modern implants and standardization of surgical technique have improved the clinical outcomes. Conventional radiology remains the cornerstone in the preoperative planning and in the post-operative follow-up of knee replacement. Improvement of metal artifact reduction techniques allows the use of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) even in the post-operative period. Nuclear medicine plays an important role in detecting loosening and infections. This chapter describes the most common implants and surgical techniques used in knee replacement and reviews imaging techniques, together with their efficacy in assessing the pre- and post-operative prosthetic knee.
