L’istituzione carcere può essere pensata come un organismo omogeneo il cui compito è di eseguire le condanne a pena detentiva; di fatto, ogni istituto penitenziario presenta, invece, proprie specifiche caratteristiche. La tipologia delle strutture penitenziarie, 206 su tutto il territorio nazionale, è piuttosto variata per le dimensioni, la tipologia della popolazione ospitata, e le funzioni che esse assicurano.
