Abstract

ECMO support was developed in the early 1970s, and significant achievements and advancements in technology have enabled wider indications for support. ECMO can provide support, either cardiac or respiratory support. The versatility and safety provided by ECMO allows the support of a number of thoracic surgical procedures both in the adult and paediatric population. This chapter describes the use of ECMO for thoracic surgery.
