Abstract
Dislocations of the carpometacarpal joints disrupt the normal transverse and longitudinal arches of the palm, impair grip strength and can also affect the balance between intrinsic and extrinsic muscles when there is proximal displacement of the metacarpal. The dislocated metacarpal base is frequently fractured and is commonly associated with a fracture of the corresponding distal carpal row bone. The complex anatomy and the significant number of anatomic varieties, render the carpometacarpal joints as the least studied. Both high and low energy trauma have been implicated in the production of these injuries. Frequently their diagnosis is delayed due to insufficient initial radiological control. Thus different radiological views are being proposed, in order to fully depict each carpometacarpal joint. In this chapter, the most commonly used classification schemes are also analyzed and these injuries are examined in both acute and chronic presentation. Further analysis is made on localized or multiple carpometacarpal joint injuries.
