Abstract

Anemia occurs frequently in critically ill patients. In many cases, the underlying cause(s) are easy to detect, but sometimes the diagnosis is challenging for intensivist not particularly expert in hematology. The main causes of anemia in ICU patients are described, particularly focusing on diseases not commonly encountered in this setting and thus difficult to identify.
