Abstract
Although perianal disease is well recognized as a major complication of Crohn’s disease (CD), its association with ulcerative colitis (UC) has been reported in up to 20–25% of patients [1–4]. Anorectal complications in UC patients include conditions such as hemorrhoids, skin tags, anal strictures, fissures, fistulas, and abscesses. Recent studies have focused on fistulas and abscesses, which are major complications of UC after ileal-pouch-anal-anas-tomosis (IPAA), although the spontaneous occurrence of these lesions has been reported in up to 5% of patients with an initial diagnosis of UC. In approximately 25% of these patients, the findings may change the initial diagnosis of UC over time [4].
