Riassunto
Il termine inglese caregiver indica coloro che si prendono cura di un altro individuo, che non riesce più a occuparsi autonomamente di se stesso, e si preoccupano dei suoi bisogni fisici, psichici e sociali. Mentre si parla di helper per designare colui che fornisce sostegno in maniera limitata, il termine caregiver comprende sia coloro che svolgono questo ruolo per motivi professionali, come i medici e gli infermieri, sia coloro che sono mossi da legami affettivi e familiari. In quest’ultimo caso il caregiver svolge il proprio compito in maniera continuativa e rilevante in virtù del senso di responsabilità, senza ricevere una retribuzione e senza avere una preparazione specifica. Frequentemente il carico assistenziale grava su un’unica persona, anche quando potrebbe essere suddiviso tra più soggetti, e di solito si tratta di una donna (Heron, 1998).
