Abstract

Several recent studies have demonstrated that children may be at greater risk of awareness than adults [1–6]. The reasons why children are more likely to be aware are unknown. It is difficult to know how to prevent awareness in children without a clear understanding of what is causing it. While there is some evidence that depth- of-anesthesia monitors may decrease the risk of awareness in adults, there is no direct evidence to suggest that they do so in children.
