Abstract
The purpose of this volume is to provide state of the art knowledge about neuropsychiatric disorders in patients with Multiple Sclerosis. Because of the elusiveness and complexity of MS, before treating specific topics we have discussed some general aspects of the disease. Not only is a complete explanation of the etiology of the disease lacking, but many aspects of MS are still unclear. For example, there is no consistency in the correlations between characteristics of the lesions as they appear on MRI, and the symptomatic and functional picture presented by individual patients. Furthermore, the variety of damage to the nervous system caused by MS makes it difficult to construct a coherent set of information about the disease that would allow developing therapies and effective interventions to improve the lives of these patients. This is not surprising, however, because MS is a multiform disease of the nervous system, which is the most complex, and most difficult to evaluate, structure in the human body.
