Nel campo della medicina, le procedure che utilizzano le radiazioni ionizzanti sono diventate uno strumento fondamentale e indispensabile sia nella diagnostica che nella terapia. Le discipline mediche che ne fanno maggiormente uso sono la radiodiagnostica, la radiologia interventistica, la medicina nucleare, la radioterapia. Un problema che in generale si pone quando si ese guono esposizioni mediche è la valutazione degli effetti biologici anche in riferimento ai potenziali danni che esse potrebbero apportare.
