Abstract

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic, progressive condition in which a dysfunction of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) allows gastric contents to reflux into the esophagus, pharynx, respiratory tract, and mouth. The disease is typically characterized by symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation, and can progress to the complications of erosive esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus and adenocarcinoma.
