Abstract
Until very recently, it was taken for granted that there would be somebody else out there, not just elementary forms of life, such as the bacteria that had lorded over Earth for billions of years (and which today still make up the bulk of our biomass). No, when we said ‘somebody’, we meant developed and intelligent life.
