Abstract

In this introductory chapter we summarize some fundamental topics of approximation theory by finite elements and finite differences. The aim is to introduce the reader to notations and conventions used in the book and to gather in an organic way some basic results that are scattered in the vast literature concerning finite elements and finite differences.
