Consideriamo un punto P di massa m che cade, senza attrito e soggetto solo alla forza di gravità, lungo una curva posta su un piano verticale e passante per due punti A = (0, 0), B = (b, b′). Indicata con C la classe delle curve con le proprietà suddette, vogliamo trovare y ∈ C che rende minimo il tempo T(y) che il punto P impiega per andare da A a B lungo la curva y = y(x).
