La concentrazione idrogenionica dei fluidi corporei viene mantenuta in un range molto stretto di valori, affinché si svolgano indisturbati i processi metabolici ed elettrofisiologici delle membrane eccitabili dell’organismo. La concentrazione idrogenionica dell’ambiente extracellulare si attesta sui 35–44 nmol/l (una concentrazione notevolmente bassa).
