Riassunto
Il concetto di coppia ha già in sé quello di relazione: il termine latino copula 1, da cui deriva, significa infatti legame, congiunzione e si riferisce in modo specifico al legame tra due persone, diversamente da par, che invece rimanda alla congiunzione tra cose o animali, “appaiati” appunto in base alla somiglianza. In psicologia, si parla di “relazione con i pari” per indicare il rapporto con persone, dello stesso sesso o di sesso opposto e con cui di solito si interagisce quotidianamente, ma con cui non necessariamente si ha un legame stretto. La relazione con gli “altri significativi” è invece un rapporto con un altro che non è generico, ma appunto significativo nel senso che si prende cura del soggetto ed è la fonte principale della soddisfazione dei suoi bisogni materiali e soprattutto emotivi. Questa funzione è svolta dal partner, ma anche dai genitori, dai familiari o da persone esterne alla famiglia con cui si ha un legame stretto. La relazione di coppia, coniugale o non, si colloca quindi nel contesto più ampio delle relazioni interpersonali, ma ha delle caratteristiche specifiche che la differenziano da tutti gli altri tipi di legame (Fig. 2.1).
