Abstract

The introduction of the new funding system of health care based on DRG (Diagnosis related groups) produced deep changes in the management of patients undergoing surgery. The new prospective payment system induced hospitals, on the one hand, to the introduction of cost containment strategies and, on the other hand, to an improvement of the quality standards of services.
