Even today severe head injury (SHI) is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. Approximately 150,000 people sustain SHI in Germany every year, resulting in 14,000 deaths and more than 4,000 with poor neurologic outcome like vegetative state. There is no influence on primary brain injury following cranial trauma, so prevention of secondary brain injury is the main goal of mangement during the course after SHI.
