Whiplash refers to the sudden hyperextension followed by flexion of the neck that occurs when an occupant of a motor vehicle is hit from behind by another vehicle. This is such a typical mode of action determining pain in the neck that this same term is known in other languages as well: in Italian it is known as “colpo di frusta”, in French it is known as “le coup de lapein” and in German as “schleudertrauma”.
