Endocrine Tests and Hormonal Therapy in Craniopharyngioma

Abstract

The hypothalamus exerts control over the anterior pituitary gland and synthesizes hormones of the posterior pituitary: vasopressin and oxytocin are synthesized in the hypothalamic-supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei: they migrate along neuronal axons of the supraoptic-pituitary tract and terminate in the posterior pituitary where they are stored and released into the systemic circulation. Hypothalamic control of anterior pituitary secretion is exerted by neurotransmitters and neurohormones that reach the pituitary by the hypothalamo-pituitary portal system and stimulate or inhibit the secretion of pituitary hormones (Table 1).
