The airway and ventilation of the infant and child give rise to the most frequent complications in paediatric anaesthesia, i.e. problems in the oxygenation. An understanding of this pathology rests upon a knowledge of normal development in anatomy, physiological function and the specific differences between the adult and the paediatric airway. With this understanding and knowledge, an appropriate choice of anaesthesia system (circuit) can be made.
