Abstract

Throughout the mean 40-week duration of a pregnancy, woman’s life and that of her baby may be at stake. The threats to feto-maternal wellbeing may originate from the changes that pregnancy induces upon the maternal organism, may be facilitated by pre-existing maternal disease, or may be due to pathological processes of the fetoplacental unit. Whatever the reason, complications can be severe, at times developing rapidly.
