Abstract
The assessment of the severity of organ dysfunction in the ICU is a critical tool for conducting clinical trials, especially sepsis trials. The evaluation of new therapies cannot be successfully achieved without checking the degree of organ dysfunction. It is not adequate to assess severity, or to describe a patient’s condition, by simply counting the number of dysfunctioning organ systems.
