Abstract
The prime function of respiration consists in maintaining alveolar and blood O2/CO2 partial pressures at their physiological levels. Under physiological conditions respiration allows an adequate amount of inspired air to contact and arterialize venous blood, thus meeting the body’s energy requirements.
