Abstract

We will present information on psychoactive drugs used for the management of pain. Opioids are the most potent pain-relieving drugs and are often the drugs of choice in the management of acute severe pain. Opioids are discussed elsewhere in this book. Psychoactive drugs other than opioids are mainly used in chronic pain as adjuvant treatment and have little or no place in the treatment of acute pain. They are mainly comprised by the classes of antidepressants, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, and anxiolytics. We will briefly present the problem of chronic pain, the medication in chronic pain and the present status of psychoactive drug use.
