Abstract

The oral-pharyngeal swallow transports a bolus from the oral cavity through the pharynx and the upper oesophageal sphincter (UES) to the oesophagus. The structures of the oral cavity, pharynx and larynx, thirty-three head and neck muscles, and five cranial nerves are involved in swallowing. This occurs when the reflex of deglutition is triggered [1,2].
