Abstract
A few years ago, John Camm and I wrote an editorial (1) presenting the conditions necessary to make the dream of an atrial defribillator come true. These conditions include feasibility, safety, and tolerability. The atrial defibrillator should be able to reliably detect and terminate atrial fibrillation (AF). The feasibility and safety of such a device must be discussed together with the possible need for an implantable atrial defibrillator (IAD) and its role among the therapeutic strategies for AF.
