Abstract
In 1859, Landry documented a clinical profile of generalised weakness and distal paraesthesia. Almost 60 years later, in 1916, Georges Guillain and Jean Barré redefined the same clinical condition, but in addition identified an increase in proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid. Based on this description, the term Guillain-Barré syndrome was first coined.
