Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone: Physiological and Endocrinological Aspects
Biological processes are time dependent and mostly take the form of recurring cycles which are subject to active and inactive periods. Apparently, process of natural selection favored a cycle in which an organism was not required to function at maximum capacity all the time, but could transiently pause at distinct intervals (Bünning 1967). Many hormones are released episodically, the length of the episodes depending on the individual rhythms of the hormones. The spectrum of releasing frequencies is widely distributed; yearly, monthly, daily, and hourly rhythms are known. In the animal system, seasonal rutting is a well-known example, while in humans, examples include the female menstrual cycle, the circadian secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and the 1- to 2-h pulse secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
