In the last fifteen years, several alternatives for transpyloric enteric nutrition have been developed in response to the increasing number of patients with acute or chronic medical conditions who need temporary or permanent nutritional support. Although parenteral nutrition may be used initially, most patients will require, in the long run, placement of some type of enteric feeding for improving or maintaining their nutritional status.
