Abstract

It was not long after the foundation of WFSA that there was a widespread feeling that 4 years was too long between major international congresses. Mayrhofer recalls that it was Cecil Gray (UK) who, whilst attending the Central European Meeting in Düsseldorf in 1959, suggested that WFSA should hold a European Congress half way between its World Congresses. This idea was readily accepted. As a result, the 1st European Congress of Anaesthesi-ologists was held in Vienna in 1962. At the congress, the European Regional Section (ERS) was formally established; 35 years later, this was to become the Confederation of European National Societies of Anaesthesiologists (CENSA), maintaining its connection with its “parent”, WFSA. The 2nd European Congress was held in Copenhagen in 1966.
